Tour guide
Showing visitors a place, and explaining why it matters
What people in this work actually do
Plan and lead tours, explain history, culture and nature accurately, manage a group's time and safety, handle questions, and arrange transport, tickets and meals.
This may suit you if…
You like talking to strangers, you enjoy learning about your own area in depth, and you are organised enough to keep a group to time.
Strongly seasonal — some months are very busy and others have almost nothing. Income depends partly on tips. You are on your feet outdoors in all weather. Tourist numbers can collapse for reasons entirely outside your control.
We show these because nobody else will.
What people get wrong about this
That it needs foreign languages. Most visitors in India are domestic, so Hindi and the local language are the most useful, and depth of local knowledge beats language range.
What this looks like in a smaller town
Temple towns, wildlife sanctuaries, craft villages and heritage sites across Odisha and elsewhere need guides who actually know the place, and local residents have a genuine advantage.
Ways into this work
There is almost always more than one route, and the cheapest is often perfectly respected.
