Tailor and dressmaker

Making and altering clothes to fit

What people in this work actually do

Take measurements, cut and sew garments, alter and repair clothing, choose and cost materials, meet a deadline a customer has fixed, and build a reputation that brings repeat work.

This may suit you if…

You are patient with detailed work, you have an eye for how something will look finished, and you like making something real with your hands.

The hard parts

Income is seasonal, with festival and wedding seasons very busy and quiet months between. Long hours bent over a machine causes real back and eye strain. Price competition from ready-made clothing is constant.

We show these because nobody else will.

What people get wrong about this

That it is only for women, or that it is a last resort. Skilled tailoring, especially specialised work, is a respected trade and one of the most achievable routes to working for yourself.

What this looks like in a smaller town

Can be started at home with one machine and very little capital, which makes it one of the few trades that works around family responsibilities. Boutique and alteration work in small towns is growing.

Ways into this work

There is almost always more than one route, and the cheapest is often perfectly respected.
