Nurse
Caring for patients and running the day-to-day of a ward
What people in this work actually do
Assess patients, give medicines and injections, dress wounds, assist in procedures and deliveries, monitor recovery, keep records, explain treatment to families, and supervise assistants.
This may suit you if…
You can stay calm when someone else cannot, you are organised under pressure, and you genuinely want to look after people.
Night shifts, long hours and chronic understaffing. You carry real responsibility for people's lives. Emotional exhaustion is common and support is often thin. Pay in the private sector varies enormously and can be poor relative to the responsibility.
We show these because nobody else will.
What people get wrong about this
That it is a fallback for those who could not become doctors. Nursing is its own profession with its own expertise, and senior nurses run departments.
What this looks like in a smaller town
Government nursing schools charge very little and often have a bond to serve in rural areas afterwards — which, if you intend to work near home anyway, is an advantage rather than a cost.
Ways into this work
There is almost always more than one route, and the cheapest is often perfectly respected.
