Motor vehicle mechanic
Finding out why a vehicle stopped, and fixing it
What people in this work actually do
Diagnose faults by listening, testing and using diagnostic tools, repair or replace engine, brake, suspension and electrical parts, service vehicles to schedule, and explain honestly to the owner what is wrong.
This may suit you if…
You like taking things apart to understand them, you are persistent with a problem that does not give up easily, and you do not mind dirty hands.
Dirt, oil, heat and heavy lifting. Modern vehicles are increasingly electronic, so you must keep learning or fall behind. Customers often want it cheap and immediate.
We show these because nobody else will.
What people get wrong about this
That two-wheeler repair is a lesser trade. Two-wheelers are the vehicle most Indian families own, and a mechanic trusted by a neighbourhood has a very reliable living.
What this looks like in a smaller town
Almost every village road has a two-wheeler repair shop. Electric vehicles are creating demand for mechanics who understand batteries and motors, which is worth learning early.
Ways into this work
There is almost always more than one route, and the cheapest is often perfectly respected.
