Modern crop farmer
Growing crops as a business, not only for the household
What people in this work actually do
Decide what to plant and when, prepare soil, manage irrigation, control pests, harvest, and sell at the best price you can get. Modern farming also means keeping records, using soil-test results, and knowing which government scheme or subsidy applies to you.
This may suit you if…
You like being outdoors, you are patient, and you are willing to learn new methods rather than only doing what was always done.
Income depends on rain, pests and market prices, none of which you control. A bad year is a bad year. Physical work in heat. Money often comes in two or three lump sums a year, so budgeting matters enormously.
We show these because nobody else will.
What people get wrong about this
That farming means poverty. A farmer who plans crops around market demand, uses soil testing and sells directly can do considerably better than one who does not.
What this looks like in a smaller town
In most districts there is a Krishi Vigyan Kendra that gives free advice and training. Many successful small farmers started with half an acre and one additional skill, such as nursery raising or vegetable seed production.
Ways into this work
There is almost always more than one route, and the cheapest is often perfectly respected.
